PowerArchiver vs WinZip

In 2024, WinZip pivoted to subscription-only (jumping from v28 to v76 to mark the break). PowerArchiver kept its perpetual license model. Side-by-side honestly: feature parity where it exists, real cost over 3 years, and where each product fits.
At a glance

Three differences that matter most

Licensing model

PowerArchiver: Perpetual licensing — you own the license forever. PA Select premium maintenance is a separate add-on (25%/yr or 50% for 3 years), priced well below any subscription comparable.

WinZip (since 2024): Annual subscription only for new customers. Stops working when you stop paying. Existing perpetual users no longer receive free upgrades.

Product focus

PowerArchiver: Compression and archive management is the only product line. 25+ years of focused development on a single mature codebase.

WinZip: Compression bundled with PDF tools, image management, and cloud backup as a productivity suite. Different value proposition for users who want bundling.

Ownership & stability

PowerArchiver: Privately held by ConeXware, Inc. (U.S.-incorporated, independent since 2001). No PE rollup, no parent conglomerate.

WinZip: Owned by Alludo (formerly Corel), backed by KKR private equity. Subscription pivot was a portfolio-wide strategic decision.

What's in each product, side by side

Where both products offer something equivalent, we say so. Where one is materially better or worse, we note that too. Honest comparison, not hand-waving.

Where WinZip wins: mobile platforms, broader cloud-storage integrations (Box, Teams, IBM Cloud), and bundled PDF / image tools if you want them in the same product. If those matter more than perpetual ownership and 3-year TCO, WinZip may be the better fit.
Switching from WinZip

No conversion needed — your archives just work

PowerArchiver is fully compatible with every ZIP / ZIPX / 7Z / RAR archive WinZip creates. Switching is install-and-go for individual users; for fleet deployments, use the MSI installer with your existing GPO / SCCM tooling.

    FAQ

Direct answers to the comparison questions we get most

Is PowerArchiver actually compatible with WinZip-encrypted archives?

Yes — PowerArchiver fully supports the ZIP AES standard at 128 / 192 / 256 bits, including PKZip 5.1 (full), Secure Zip 8.0, and WinZip 9.0 AE-1 + AE-2. Files encrypted by WinZip open in PowerArchiver and vice versa, as long as the password is correct.

Why did WinZip switch to subscriptions?

WinZip is owned by Alludo (formerly Corel), which is in turn owned by KKR private equity. Subscription pricing produces predictable annual recurring revenue — a portfolio-wide preference for PE-backed software companies. The 2024 pivot from version 28 to 76.x signaled a clean break from the perpetual model. PowerArchiver remains independently owned and has no equivalent pressure.

If I have an old WinZip perpetual license, do I need to switch?

Not technically — your existing WinZip perpetual license keeps working on the version you bought. But Corel's KB confirms "WinZip upgrades are not free" for perpetual users, so you'll be stuck on the version you purchased. PowerArchiver Select gives you free upgrades to all major and minor versions during your active term, so you never get version-locked.

When is WinZip the better fit?

If you need iOS or Android apps, broader cloud-storage integrations (Box, IBM Cloud, Teams), or bundled PDF and image-management tools as part of the same product, WinZip's productivity-suite approach may suit better. If you want compression done well, perpetual licensing, lower TCO, and independent ownership, PowerArchiver is the better fit.

Are PowerArchiver's compliance certifications equivalent to WinZip's?

For FIPS 140-2 and DFARS, both products meet the U.S. federal data-protection requirements at their respective Enterprise tiers. PowerArchiver Enterprise ($59.95 or Enterprise Unlimited from $4,995) uses Microsoft CryptoAPI's Enhanced Cryptographic Provider for FIPS-validated cryptography. We publish our NIST CMVP certificates by Windows version and a public VPAT for Section 508. WinZip Enterprise has equivalent claims; specifics often require a quote conversation with their sales team.

For an enterprise migration, how long does this take?

Depends on fleet size and admin policies. For organizations with existing MSI deployment infrastructure (SCCM, Intune, GPO), pilot rollout to a 50-seat sample group typically takes 1–2 weeks; full fleet rollout, 4–8 weeks including admin lockdown configuration. Our sales engineering team will model your specific case as part of the quote — contact us with your fleet size and current WinZip configuration.
