Lightbulb Dropping file onto archive (ZIP)

When I drag a file (no difference left or right drag) onto an archive, I get an error message saying the archive cannot be created as it exists - this is unecessary (can it be removed) - I get asked if I want to update the existing file - which I do. I would like an option as to whether the file is moved or added - I can only seem to do the latter. Part of this process is a message asking if I want to overwrite the existing acrchive...which is quite alarming.

I do like dragging and dropping with archives and the process with PA is not as polished as it could be.

With kind regards

DrT

the way it works for me is it asks you if you are sure if you want to update the file, because you might do it by accident (drag an file icon onto the archive icon)... and it asks you to overwrite only if you say no to update...

Overwrite should be alarming as old archive is being deleted.

Or is there something else happening for you?

Hi,

It happens for me just as I described it...with the 'unable to create as it exists' message. I have just checked with several different zip files all the same result. I get the overwriting message if I decline to update the existing archive. I get exactly the same behaviour on another PC. What more info can I give you? I can do screen shots if you need.

Cheers

I don't see this either, however I'm on XP. Which OS are you using - I know you have XP and Vista but also

Hi guys,

1) Using XP. Just tested it with Vista, drag and drop does not work.

2) The archive already exists. I like using drag and drop to add/move a file to an *existing* archive. Just drag and drop an existing file onto an existing zip file until a '+' appears.

WinZip does this okay without any error messages of any type...it just works - in fact a dialogue box appears asking if I want to add or move the extra file. IIRC, there is a section in the options to configure this behaviour. Don't use WinZip anymore so a moot point.

Let me know if you need any further info.

Cheers

that works here... it might be due to specific zip maybe? maybe filename or complete path?

create 1.zip in C:\1 and try adding 1.txt from C:\1 to it, does that work?

Still don't see the "unable..." message?

Just to be explicit - how are you doing this..

Where is the Zip archive -
a) In PA GUI
b) Using Windows explorer
c) Just on Windows Desktop
d) Drive/Partition/Network?

And same questions for the file you are dragging.

I am guessing that the dragged file does not already exist inside archive - although doesn't seem to matter in my checking.
P.S. Also Zip is not password protected??

Tested on two PCs under XP with the same result. Several files tested.
PS Three PCs now tested with the same result.

Tested on two PCs under XP with several zips. The results of the test that you asked me to do are attached - no change. What I am trying to achieve only works if I click 'yes' in drop.jpg (the larger of the two shots).

Just fired up an old XP laptop, same result there too using your 1.zip test.

Cheers

OK. I completely mis-understood your original message.

I thought this was two dialogues - but you meant that the information is only in the one; and I do see this.

I don't agree that it is unnecessary - what if you dropped on the wrong archive (or only meant to drop in a gap to do a windows move/copy and not an archive process)? This is the only way to provide an "oops - cancel" option.

Correct - drag and drop to an archive only performs the "copy" function (as in backup).

Only if you choose not to "update" the existing archive. This is logical as you are then creating an archive with the same name (and in the same folder) as the existing one - it should not be overwritten silently.

All in PA 11.03.04 (english).

The file is moved or copied NOT deleted. The recycle bin can also be used as a safety net. There is no need for an extra "oops - cancel" option.

It does not have to be so, cf WinZip.

Adding or moving a file to an archive has got nothing to do with overwriting the archive...the message appears even with differently archive/file names.

I wasn't referring to the dragged file, update modifies the archive file as well, which could be the unwanted action (e.g. oops - wrong archive).

No, you are adding <file> to <archive.zip> so modifying the existing archive. If you cancel this add, then the next action would be to create a new archive using the filename of the original archive (hence overwriting it).

Drag & drop is not creating <file.zip>.

Of course, you could say that this overwrite should not occur - when choosing Cancel to update, then just cancel everything.

So a file is added to the archive either way, it can be deleted.

Why should there be a 'next action'? The way you are writing it is as if you regard it as an inevitable action. If I want to create an archive, I will...but what has drag and drop got to do with it?

That's strange as the situation is consistent here across 3 PCs. Unless you can suggest a way to diagnose/debug the process, I'll have to give up on drag and drop. Now where's that copy of WinZip?

Cheers

yeah, thats supposed to be that way - i get different worded one since for vista we had to use different drag and drop code for it to work (one without can not create but just update notification)....

if you guys want, we could give full d&d options window when you drag and drop here (check with archive open in PA and then drag and drop file for example)? Or just change the wording to mention update only and not can not create?

That would be my preference.
And when choosing No on update, then just quit - as it does if
